It's Ruth's last week with us here at Moji Studio making two cushions: One square piped cushion with zip and one round cushion with piping, zip and gusset. As the photos show the cushions look great and I am happy to say that Ruth left very inspired and pleased with both her courses and cushions. Lucky people who are getting them for Christmas this year.

Here is Sam learning how to print her own fabric and making a drum lampshade using modern lampshade making technique. The fabric is 100% linen and printed with water based eco friendly ink available at Moji Studio. The image Sam has chosen has been cut to a stencil first and then by using screen printing technique printed on the piece of fabric she used for her lampshade. Looks really nice so well done Sam!

Here are the pictures of one of my Traditional Lampshade Making workshops I run from my Studio and sue who attended the workshop made a very elegant lampshade with 100% silk and decorated by cream trimmings. Well done Sue!

Here is one of my students Linda from Brighton learning how to make Curtains and Roman Blind. This three day workshop is quite intensive but fun. You will learn how to construct a pencil pleat curtain, two different headings and finally roman blind all using hand sewing technique.

The 1-2 day advanced lampshade making workshop acts as a follow on from our two day traditional lampshade making workshop where students will be learning how to construct a shade using one of the following techniques: Pleating, gathering or panelling. Here is another one of my students Gemma attending the two day traditional lampshade making workshop at the studio. Her lampshade is covered with a very nice cotton fabric with paisley pattern and decorated with matching trim on top and feather trim on bottom of the shade. The result is a very chic country style shade, so well done Gemma!
Gemma is planning to make and sell very beautiful antler chandeliers which will be showcased in my blog very soon.

“The concept is brilliant as it gives us an opportunity as designers to showcase our products in a prominent shop location. Getting into shops is not an easy thing because you need to go to exhibitions and shows, and not all designers can afford that. It is early days at the moment but from my point of view it is working brilliantly and I am stocking up the shop on a regular basis. I am currently booked until after Christmas. I just thought that it was a risk that was worth taking and I was in a position to spend that money to see how my products would do in a good location.”

Pattern Matching

As pattern matching can sometimes be very time consuming, I have put together a very simple technique without the need of tacking:

Prepare two pieces of fabric that you want to join and pattern match. It's always best to pattern match fabrics on the selvedge side on both pieces but even raw edges are ok.

Lay your first piece of fabric right side upwards with the raw edge or selvedge on the right hand side.

Fold and press over one side of the selvedge or raw edge on your second piece of fabric with wrong side facing upwards and place the crease line on top of the first piece and match the pattern.

At this stage all you need to do is to machine down the crease line on your second piece of the fabric and you have to make sure that this is done as close to the fold or crease line as possible.( Where the black pins are pointing)

After stitching through three layers of fabric lay flat and press and you will have two pieces of fabric with a perfect pattern matching on both front and back.

If you are curious about textile printing but perhaps slightly intimidated by all the hand printing techniques which you can use to make your mark on a variety of surfaces, then you are welcome to come along to our open studios where we offer short taster sessions and you can have a look at the processes, ideas and techniques behind our work. Our open studios are full of creative fun and will give you an insight into what to expect if you decide to book any of our one to one workshops held at the studio. The open studios take place on regular basis throughout the year between
10.30am - 1.30pm weekdays and 11.30am -1.30pm weekends. (Times might vary depending on the season)

Dates for our open studios will be published in our blog and website on a regular basis or alternatively call us on 07912407717 prior to your visit. Ample parking is available and entry is free.

Hello everyone. I have two great news for you. The first one is that most of my products are now selling on Contemporary Lab which is a fabolous website where you will find huge collections of innovative, luxurious and sustainably produced homewares and gifts mainly made by post-graduate designers. With Emma Brocklesby who is the brain behind the site, Contamporary Lab has successfully created a collection of home products that will appeal to buyers of all budgets.
The second news is that I am now working as ContemporaryLab's in house designer as well which I am finding very exciting and challengin.

The photos are all from the lauch party held at Emma's family home where beautiful drinks & canapés were served whilst the guests indulged themselves in ContemporaryLab's beautiful products on display!

"Lalejin" near Hamedan province

Antique or old wooden doors have always been one of my passions and this particular one is situated in Hamedan, near "Lalejin", where the most beautiful earthenware pottery and ceramics are produced and exported to Europe and Middle East.The Iranian city of Lalejin and the Italian city of Faenza, both known for their glazed earthenware pottery and ceramics, were named sister cities during a seminar held in Hamedan Province.

What I love about this picture is how the most beautiful and colourful ceramics are fired using very traditional hand made kilns. This trip made me so proud being part of this emazing cultural heritage and I can't wait to see other part of this beautiful country which I haven't been back to for almost 26 years. One thing that is very clear for me now is that I will definitely be back again.

A Persian Inspired Dinner at Martha Stewart house 2011

Najmieh Batmanglij appeared and shared some fabulous recipes from her impressive book called Food of Life: Ancient Persian and Modern Iranian Cooking and Ceremonies with Marta stwart on her show this year. In honor of the Persian New Year, the first day of spring, Najmieh prepared wonderful and fragrant braised lamb shanks and a special basmati rice recipe.Then Martha loved it so much that she asked her friend, Chef Pierre Schaedelin to use some of her recipes and prepare a beautiful dinner for a group of editors from her magazine. As Pierre cooked throughout the day, amazing aromas filled the air.

The Brighton Craftganza at Fabrica is finally over and it was a fabulous show and I can't wait for the next one to attend. I really enjoyed the day which had a fantastic atmosphere and although I did very well but for me it was more about meeting other people and spreading the word about my products.I got to meet so many other talented artists and the feedback you get from them and the general public is simply priceless. I would definitely recommend attending craft shows specially to those crafters who might find it daunting at the beginning and are reluctant to take the plunge. I think personally that at least for the first few shows it shouldn't be all about selling but building your self confidence and meeting others.

Ever wondered how fabrics are hand printed? Well here is a little peek at how our fabrics are hand screen printed using Eco friendly water based inks in our studio. The yardage printing technique involves accurate registering of the screen in order to achieve correctly aligned pattern repeats. After printing the fabric is dried and then heat set. This collection is called "Golestan" which literally means flower garden, but it's mystical meaning is paradise. I have designed each flower so that each petal resembles a tree inspired by the Natural Forests in Alang Darreh national park in the Golestan province 5 km south of Gorgan which is a major attraction for explorers of nature. This is one of my favourite designs in my spring collection 2011. The "Bade Sabaa" collection is about the spring and its beauty from a wind's point of view.

The poem written on the cushion is by Hafez c.1320-1388, who is the great lyric poet of Iran, famous for his ghazals.Traditionally the ghazal had dealt with love and wine, motifs that, in their association with ecstasy and freedom from restraint, lent themselves naturally to the expression of Sufi ideas. Hafiz's achievement was to give these conventional subjects a freshness and subtlety that completely relieves his poetry of tedious formalism. http://www.textetc.com/workshop/wt-hafez-1.html

This is the whole poem although for my cushion I only used the first part of it :

Spring and all its flowers
now joyously break their vow of silence.
It is time for celebration, not for lying low;
You too - weed out those roots of sadness from your heart.
The Sabaa wind arrives;
and in deep resonance, the flower
passionately rips open its garments,
thrusting itself from itself.
The Way of Truth, learn from the clarity of water,
Learn freedom from the spreading grass.
Pay close attention to the artistry of the Sabaa wind,
that wafts in pollen from afar,
And ripples the beautiful tresses
of the fields of hyacinth flowers.
From the privacy of the harem, the virgin bud slips out,
revealing herself under the morning star,
branding your heart and your faith
with beauty.
And frenzied bulbul flies madly out of the House of Sadness
to unite with the flowers;
its love-crazed cry like a thousand-trumpet blast.
Hafez says, and the experienced old ones concur:
All you really need
is to tell those Stories
of the Fair Ones and the Goblet of Wine.
